3: Asteya: Non-Stealing
Asteya: Non-StealingNon-Stealing is refraining from taking what isn’t yours and refraining from taking more than you need.
Practices for non-stealing:
• Refrain from stealing from the earth
• Refrain from stealing from the future
• Refrain from stealing from others
• Refrain from stealing from yourself
• Practice reciprocity with all things
Become excited about what you do have in:
• material goods
• relationships
• your own unique gifts and talents
• the gift of life itself

Asteya, the practice of non-stealing, invites us to recognize where we might be taking more than we need—whether from others, the earth, the future, or even ourselves. While the ego often operates from a place of lack, grasping for more in an attempt to feel secure, the higher self understands that abundance is found in gratitude and reciprocity. When we take without giving back, whether it’s consuming resources without mindfulness, stealing time from others without appreciation, or doubting our own gifts instead of sharing them, we disrupt the natural balance of life. Practicing asteya means not only refraining from theft in a literal sense but also honoring the flow of energy, ensuring that we contribute as much as we receive.

|
True non-stealing shifts our focus from scarcity to sufficiency. Instead of longing for what we don’t have, we cultivate excitement and gratitude for what we do—our relationships, our talents, our material resources, and the simple gift of being alive. When the ego fixates on what’s missing, it robs us of presence, joy, and the ability to fully engage with life. The higher self, however, sees that generosity and reciprocity are the keys to true fulfillment. By honoring our own enoughness and practicing mindful stewardship of all we’ve been given, we align with the natural rhythm of give and take, transforming our lives into a practice of trust, appreciation, and flow.

4: Bramahcharya: Moderation
Brahmacharya: Non-Excess means refraining from overindulgence with food, sleep, pleasure, and work. It is cultivating a sense of sacredness in all that you do.
Practices for non-excess:
• Learn to tell when the nourishment of enough turns into the dullness of excess
• Separate what the body really needs from the extravagant message the mind is telling you about these needs
• Live your passion
• Honor all things as sacred
• Honor yourself as sacred

Brahmacharya, the practice of non-excess, invites us to find balance in the way we engage with the world—refraining from overindulgence in food, sleep, pleasure, or work, and instead cultivating a deep sense of sacredness in all that we do. The ego, often driven by desire and external validation, convinces us that more is always better—more success, more comfort, more distractions. But the higher self recognizes that true fulfillment comes not from excess, but from intentionality. When we overconsume, whether it’s food, entertainment, or even busyness, we dull our senses rather than nourish them. Learning to discern when enough is truly enough allows us to stay present, honoring both our needs and our energy with wisdom and care.

Practicing brahmacharya is a conscious act of aligning our lives with what truly serves us. It asks us to separate what the body actually needs from the mind’s extravagant cravings, to honor ourselves as sacred rather than seeking validation through excess, and to live with passion without burning ourselves out. When we recognize that every moment, every action, and every interaction holds the potential for reverence, we shift from mindless consumption to mindful appreciation. The higher self moves with awareness, treating all things—including the body, relationships, and work—with respect and devotion. By living in balance, we step into a life that is not only sustainable but deeply meaningful.
